REBECCA RÖNTY
editor of non-native english
Alongside my work as a translator, I also edit texts that have been written in or translated into English by non-native speakers. The demand for such services has increased over the years, with an increasing number of companies and subject specialists using English as their lingua franca.
The degree of editing required differs from text to text. The scope of each project is always discussed in advance, based on a range of factors such as text type, audience, purpose, as well as the proficiency of the English provided.
I focus on texts authored by native German and Finnish speakers as I can relate to and understand the intricacies of these languages best. Besides having an educational background rooted in German studies, I have translated from German and also lived in Germany for well over a decade now, giving me a thorough grasp of and deeper insights into not only the language, but also its speakers and business culture. My interest in Finnish has evolved over the past six or so years, since meeting my Finnish partner, and deepened further with the birth of our now Finnish-speaking son. Through the connection we have to Finland, I have developed a sound awareness and understanding of the way in which Finnish speakers express themselves in English.
With both these languages, I'm therefore able to understand what is and, perhaps more importantly, what isn't being said, and can edit English texts in a way that not only corrects grammatical errors, but truly reflects the author's intention.
