Specialisms

Although perhaps not an initial consideration, knowing how and where to pitch yourself as a translator is something you should give some thought. For some people this is not an issue - if you are side stepping into translation from another career then it might be assumed you already have a strong knowledge of a certain industry, be it business, medicine, finance, etc. Even for translation students who have not yet worked in a specific industry, many will have incorporated certain fields into their studies. If you studied French and Maths for example, French financial translation would be an obvious place to start. If, however, you fall into the large category of language students who typically study their language(s) for the entire duration of their studies, rarely straying away into area such as economics or enginneering, then choosing a specialism may prove to be more difficult.

This blog will feature translators who are still fairly new to the industry, who will explain how they went about finding their specialist field and the type of work they have done so far within that field.
